JOHN STAPLES, Sr., was an early settler of Weymouth, living there from1639 to 1679, or perhaps longer. He died at Dorchester (now part ofBoston) 4 July, 1683. He was made a freeman of the Massachusetts BayColony, 10 May, 1649. John Staples, Sr., of Weymouth, being lame and weake, made his will 18Mar. 1681-82, and it was proved 2 Aug. 1683. In it he mentions his sonJohn to have a salt marsh at Braintree purchased of John Harbour, his sonAbraham, his son Joseph, his son-in-law Samuel Sumner, and to hisdaughter Rebecca, wife of said Samuel, his son-in-law Increase Sumner andhis daughter Sarah, wife of Increase, to have his estate in Weymouth; sonJohn Staples and son-in-law Increase Sumner, executors. Witnesses: ThomasDun and William Chard. (Suffolk Probate, 6: 425.) Children, born at Weymouth: Abraham,2 b. probably near 1637; removed to Mendon. Rebecca, b. t Mar. 1639; m. 7 Mar. 1659, Samuel Sumner of Dorchester. Joseph, b. 19 Feb. 1641; probably removed to Taunton. Sarah, b. near 1645; In. at Dorchester, 26 Mar. 1667, Increase Sumnerof Dorchester. John, Jr., living at Weymouth, 1679.
